John Aravosis at AmericaBlog lays out this interesting analysis of the Miers withdrawl. He has a bit too much "take THAT!" attitude in his logic, which almost guarantes that the universe will not let it play out that way for real, but it is a deeply satisfying read nonetheless.

NPR yesterday had a far less uppity analysis that agreed Bush will indeed appoint someone far more conservative and the entire conservative movement will rally around the appointment. Strong or weak presidency in my mind is almost an irrelevant question here.

So he's strong and he makes policy. Or he's weak and someone else makes policy. The thing we really need to ask is what policy will he adopt and how strong is the movement in favor of same? Bush doesn't have to lead a charge, he just has to allow one where the Christian right is concerned.

NPR did not consider the left managing to squelch a conservative nomination a foregone conclusion. As always, it depends on who he chooses what sort of amunition the left gets to go gunning the person down.

Anyhow, no matter how much I enjoy him, I fear Aravosis doesn't seem compellingly correct.
