Well, that was exciting. And continues to excite. The moving estimator underestimated the number of boxes by, oh, half, so they brought a truck and a half when a trailer and a big truck would have been more appropriate. They wound up making two trips and had to eat the overage, because they always bill to estimate. Still, no drops, no damage, and they only ran over their time estimate by one hour. By about Tuesday, we had something that approximately functions as a house.

Place to sleep: check, although our platform chest-bed will not, cannot, no way no how be made to fit into our bedroom, even if it is disassembled. We tried three angles/orientations with the movers, and I measured the dimensions of the pieces before I jumped in and disassembled the thing. So we'll have a nice queen sized six-drawer chest bed frame for same right soon here, speak up if you're interested.
Giant yard sale box started: check. There is never time to sort, toss, or sell everything that ought to go before a move.
Food and a way to prepare it: check. Did we mention that 34 cubic feet of fridge/freezer rocks multiple worlds of coldness?
Clothing sufficient unto the day thereof: check.
Mechanisms for cleaning clothes and plates and utensils: check.
Floors scratched: check.
Walls marked: check.
Room layout called into doubt then utterly altered by presence of heating duct: check (Nina's room).
Cat escaped into crawlspace under the house and summarily rescued: check.
Button locks removed from all interior doors so toddler cannot lock us or himself inside a room: check.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars of further minor repairs identified and catalogued: check.
Hot tub filled and functional: you damn right, baby. Still needs a little scrubbing around the waterline, but I am more grimy than it right now, so I can cope.

There is still a lot to do. Weeks and weeks of box worship. I won't be in the studio until June, maybe longer. We are getting music from a boombox for now, until I have time to properly unpack and bless the stereo. I intend to drill into the baseboard and run the speaker cables under the crawlspace JUST BECAUSE I CAN.

Anne walks in with Calvin when the movers are done and exclaims "I pictured this place crammed with boxes" and just then, Nina runs by, playing soccer in the living room. Um, yeah. Big house.

well, congrats, you homeowner you! welcome to the club. there is one thing i didn't see on the checklist, although it may fall under the "repairs list"...discovering your insectoid neighbors either by disturbing their nest while doing repairs under the house or in a brief encounter while pouring the morning coffee.

me: "ugh. coffee."
ant: "mornin'!"
me: "geez."
ant: "Hey, you got any cinnamon for the coffee? Stan likes cinnamon."
me: *squish*
stan ant: "Hey! that coffee smells good!"
me: *sigh*

No such critters have made their presence known, and with some of the gunk that we cleaned off the cabinet shelves in the kitchen-- 5 year old dried chocolate syrup, other viscous, sugary nastiness-- if they were there, then they would have been everywhere, especially given the rains that have poured down while the place was empty. So no ants yet, no termites at all, no mice, and...please, please, PLEASE god, so far only one snail.

"Dear GOD! What is that *thing*?!"

easy cure? shallow dishes (like frisbee shallow) of beer. they can't resist, and they die inebriated, but alcohol fried.
