Driving to the pet store with Nina and Rose, about a week ago. "Sheena is a punk rocker" comes on the radio. Nina looks at me and says, "This is the Beach Boys, right?"

I was dumbstruck. I thought briefly of calling a moratorium on the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus until she demonstrated a modicum of understanding of the rock/pop back catalog, but then I remembered that a college acquaintance once asked, while "Stairway to Heaven" was playing, "Oh wow, is this Rush?"

So we all have our little blind spots, you know. She has access to, conservatively, over 300 days worth of uninterrupted, non-repeating music in this house, if she decides such things are important :)

I suppose college (party) experiences have to be good for something. :)

I've crossed that line into having to remind my parents of who sang what these days...

Our kidlet had to remind Jim McD. of a certain Beatles song. She wanted to play "When I'm 64" (whatever the real name of that song is) for him at his birthday gathering but forgot to bring it and sang bits of it instead. He didn't remember it was the Beatles, let alone from Yellow Submarine (one of her current favorite movies.). ;-p

I was at a Tufts undergrad co-op house a couple months back. While cleaning up after dinner, the students sang a Beatles song... and knew the lyrics! And some other artist was mentioned and one of them said to another "Oh, she's kind of like Bootsy Collins". I was blown away that they knew who any of those people were.

One of my students, who had previously seemed to be relatively well-versed in classic rock (as many teen males are), thought that "Anything I Do, I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams was from the 1970's.

Then I realized he probably wasn't born yet when Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves came out.

And then I felt old.

I brought one of my friends up to my dorm room freshman year at JMU. I had a poster of the Beatles' white album on my wall. THe one that has the four headshots from inside the liner notes?

Yeah.

She asked me which one was "John McCartney."

I so almost shot her dead.
