Yes, sloppy thinking on my part, but the general point is the same; I am listening at a lower level than previously, and hearing more detail and less train noise.
I did have an opportunity this week to compare them side by side with a set of the latest Bose noise-cancelling cans. I did have to adjust the player volume up to achieve a comparable "preceived volume". Also, the Bose REALLY sound "processed"; pinched and a little metallic, even in a non-noisy environment where they shouldn't be adding much to the mix. The Etymotics are very clear in comparison.
I also flew with them for the first time, and I have to say, being able to sack out in the window seat without leaning my head against a big external headphone cup rocks out.
