Calvin's words
Jun. 14th, 2004 04:43 pmCalvin is 11 months old now, SO VERY BIG, and dangerously close to crawling. Even now, he may be stalking an unsuspecting stack of magazines in the living room.
While playing on the rug, he looks at me and says, "Eeeee!" This is a new noise, but what else can it be? He's wants to eeeeeeat. So I take him out towards his high chair, and he gets all excited and does the wave-both-arms-up-and-down happy dance. Belt him in, bib, tray, just so. I turn away to start making food and he goes "Eeeeee!" again, so I give him a half a piece of bread. I cube up some tofu and lay a half dozen pieces on the tray, and he's so excited that he can't be bothered to drop either piece of bread he is holding. Instead, he tries to bend over and stretch his mouth down to the food, but alas, a combination of belly and tray make this impossible, so I toss one piece into his mouth and go back to carrot preparation.
When I turn around again, the bread and the tofu are gone, and he is clapping, like Wimpy from Popeye, a "goody goody goody" kind of clap. So now I bring the carrots, and Calvin very neatly and patiently lets himself be spoon fed, clapping the whole time. When he goes from clapping to banging on the tray, or when he shakes his head no at a spoonful of carrot, I give him a few tofu cubes. He LOVES the tofu, and will ignore any other food, drink, or distraction if some is placed on his plate. When he says "Aaaa!" I fetch the sippy cup so he can have a drink of milk. He probably ate a cube of tofu 2" on a side, plus a big bowl of carrots, a piece of bread, and 4 ounces of milk. My cousin David, visiting last weekend, watched Calvin eat and said "He just ate more in one meal than both my kids eat all day long." Yes, that's our boy: voracious.
Today, going on recent examples, we will chronicle the lad's vocabulary. These are only the words and sounds that he has been using consistently:
Mama - very clearly these days (most practiced)
Neenee or Neeneh or Nana or, every now and again, Nina!
Papa - more often as P-P-Pa-pa-pa or variations
Da-da-da-da - very often 4 times in a row.
Aaay - Jake, the cat who lets Calvin yank on him.
Bah - just once, is a ball or, by extension, any toy.
Ba-Ba - two or more, is a bottle, or sippy cup; any source of fluids.
Bah-ee - "Bye" (still only the once, at least that I've heard)
Eeeeeeee! - "Eat!"
Aaa! - "Thirsty!" if said while eating.
Oh-ay - "OK".
Glee-glee-glee-glee-glee - at night or at naptime, with pacifier, means "Maybe happy noises will put me to sleep faster."
babadabadadabadabebe - "I'm awake but not in any distress, and feel like talking to myself until someone comes in to get me."
Mmmmm-mum-um-um - "I have poo." Subtly, but critically, different than "Mama" :)
Mhhnt (say the word hoot without opening your mouth) - "I am distressed about something, but you don't know what yet. So come find out, already!"

Date: 2004-06-14 08:22 pm (UTC)Hi-ee or sometimes Hah-oh - hi and hello, his very first words ever!
Also, Bah isn't just any toy; it must be capable of rolling. Huzzah for differentiation!
