State of the AI report, handheld version
Apr. 12th, 2004 12:22 pmA while ago,
brokensymmetry gave me his Sharp SL-5500, an object of great joy. For those so-called geeks who have been living under the wrong rock, this is a Linux/Qtopia based PDA with touch screen, full keyboard, 8 positional pointer, sound (headphone jack), aaaaand both SD and CF slots. With the addition of a 4GB IBM microdrive in the CF slot, I'll have the storage/sound equivalent of a mini iPod. On the other hand, thanks to the Qtopia system, plus the pointer and keyboard, this will be a mini-iPod that can play NetHack. Woot!
But that's not what I'm here to talk about. The device also has a Scrabble-like word game, which routinely beats the snot out of me despite the fact that it apparently "reads" at about an 8th or ninth grade level. I say this because the program's dictionary does not recognize words like revert or caption, but this morning it played "boner" on a crowded double word score.
