China: the gateway drug!

So the latest China-recall story involves a children's bead thing toy that, when accidentally ingested, metabolizes into GHB. What the HELL, people, you ran out of lead, and suddenly you've got a ready supply of designer anesthetic?

Also, take a look at that toy...Who gives that to a small child in the first place? Hello?

When relatives ask what to get the kids for the holidays this year, we have been saying "As long as it isn't made in China, we don't care." Har har har, but also, Word.

It probably says a lot about my warped little mind that I wondered if this counts as a feature in China . . . "Worried about the population explosion? Relatives have too many kids? Solve the problems with THIS!"

*cough*

Alas, I bought this same toy for my daughter for Christmas. It went on sale at Costco and I couldn't resist.

Damn. I guess I'll just have to use it for all my date-rape needs instead.

The precursor agent is GBL, which is used in various industrial products. According to another thread I've read, it's been used in plastic manufacture for years and your kids probably already have some GHB precursors scattered across the living room carpet. The specific problem with this one is it's being sold as tiny pills.

Unlike lead in the lipstick and formaldehyde in the beer and the many hundreds of problems yet to come, I'm willing to believe this one a genuine oversight on everybody's part and not evidence of relentless costcutting.*

*(Unless it turns out that GBL content in children's toys is already regulated.)
